Tournament Results

Da Tourni: Well, the tournament was only ten folks, but there was still some stiff competition. I ended up with a loss, draw, & win. Jeff B's record was draw-ish-barely-a-loss, a win, & a win. Butt munch. His only loss-esque battle was with a Nurgel army that obliterated everyone else in the room.

The nastiest, most effectively brutal armies of the Tourni were all Chaos (DUH) one of which will be featured here very soon as a guest poster. (Lemonade out of lemons, am I right?)

In contrast to Jeff B's record, I got my butt handed to me by a Noise Marine Heavy Slan-esh Army. The marines didn't worry me, but the lash-defiler combo almost made me wet my pants. Not really, but still. I was gonna getting herded into a perfect pie plate then obliterated by the defiler's battle cannon...YIKES.

All in all it was a good competitive tournament. Jeff B kicked mucho booty overall--I won Best Painted by the skin of my teeth...so it all worked out as it should. There were some really good looking armies present, so I'm honored to have my totally annihilated army still voted Best Dressed. Huzzah!

Space Marines... Really?: My last space marine army was a Chapter Approved Flesh Tearers list some time in early 3rd edition. AGES AGO...like, two Presidents ago. (Wait, that would be the same guy. ) Since then I've stuck to Xenos. After looking at the new codex, in particular the 1st company paint scheme, I've decided to dust off the old power armor and giving it another go. I hope it still works. It might need more oil than the Tin Man. But, shhhh....I have a secret weapon. I've conned Jeff B. into putting together a totally bad-a** list for me. Of course, my job is to make it look GOOD. Here is a look at the test model.

WOOT... It's Update Time

Da Looted Carnifex has gotten a few more gubbinz added, namely a brand-spankin-new bionic leg borrowed from the some unlucky tau commander. Click here for the pics.

Painting Da Boyz is the latest tutorial to be added. If your tired of playing with grey boyz this is the place for you. Here is the link.

It's Tourni Time
for the boyz of the rolling-waaagh. I with my Necron and Jeff B with his Tau, plan on entering the fray this weekend. This will hopefully start a new segment of the rollin-waaagh called "Winning Lists," where we beg, cheat, or steal away the best general's lists and post it for your viewing pleasure.

Cheers, Jeff C.

Tutorial - Rust Effect

Beginning Preparations

To start, make sure that your vehicle is almost finished. When painting a vehicle I paint the metallics, ink, block in color, and then add details. This is where the Rest Effect tutorial starts. A note on blocking in color: Make sure to make it look uneven so it gives a good chipped paint effect.

Before:

After:
For more information on painting metal and inking see the Painting the Trukk tutorial.

Step I: Watered down Vermin Brown

Use watered down vermin brown. It should be translucent when spread thin and opaque when in a watery blob. If you feel that it is a too light, add a bit of Dark Flesh to the mix. Place this mix anywhere it would rust: around bolts, in corners, underneath overhangs, and around battle damage. Remember that rust will run down and pool. When your painting rust, think about how water would run down the vehicle, that is where you want to put the rust

Step II: Watered down Blazing Orange
Use watered down Blazing Orange. Make this mix waterier than the Vermin Brown from the previous step. Paint the watered down Blazing Orange in to the same spots that you did the Vermin Brown, staying closer to the source of the rust (blot, rivet, battle damage etc…).

Step III: Metal Highlight
The final step is highlighting the edges with Chain mail. Use a thin brush and paint it on to the edges sparingly. Focus on corners, battle damage, or anything you want to stand out. I usually add some to random bolts & rivets.

***Note: If you feel that some of the detail is being lost due to the rust effect, try painting a small amount of brown ink around cracks and rivets. For a good ink mix see the Painting the Trukk tutorial.

I just wanted to add to Jeff C.'s post that even though I destroyed both his battlewagons on turn one for me, I got lucky and his meganobz still crossed the board to me. That is a testament to his skill and the meganobz quality. But, fortunately, the good guys still won out. Obviously.
Heh Heh......

'Eavy Nobz on the Battlefield

Well, the titanic clash Between the "Raining Templates" IG army and Da RollinWaaagh happened this weekend.

Let's just say--it was ugly.

I tried out a speed list with nobz in battle wagons, stormboyz, kommandos, boom wagons, and a few skorchas on the "Dawn of War" set up.

Which might have been fine, if Jeff B hadn't won the first turn, which meant he got to play his nasty little deployment trick. He put three squads of troops as far forward as possible, forcing me back to 6 inches from my board edge. Then he sent all 3 squads running back to his front lines.

I should have have put NOTHING out the first turn, and deployed the second turn.

But no.

I (brilliantly) put out my 2 battlewagon-nob squads (2 troops & HQ)--which were (shockingly) blown to kingdom come.

The only squads that made even a dent in his army were the mega-nobz and the kommandos. Everything else was pretty much a puddle of fungus.

I've been talking orks with Jeff B for a while now and have strong-armed him into giving me his yet-untested Foot Slogger list. So next time we play, it will be 2 Jeff B lists going head to head. Maybe then, I can beat him. The ork list does look pretty tough.

Cheers,
Jeff C

Tutorial - Painting Da Boyz

So you want to paint some orks... well you've come the right place. My method seems a bit lengthy, but it really isn't to bad (the secret is in the ink). The only thing I do differently now is the addition of rust. Check out the Rust Tutorial for more info on that. Alright, enough talk. Grab you paints & favorite movie (I like really bad scifi), it's time to get green!
Cheers, Jeff C.

*if you want to the finished products, head to the bottom.

(1) base black
(2) drybrush scorched brown
(3) drybrush bestial brown
(4) block in dark angels green

(5) drybrush snot green
*
for skin I use a flat brush to drybrush. For the initial brown drybrushing I used the fatter, stiffer brush below.

(6) drybrush goblin green with a little snot green mixed in.
(7) block in boltgun metal

(8) block in dwarf bronze mainly on guns
(9) block in snakebite leather for their shirts. A few were left
scorched brown so it would look more like leather.

(10) block in KommandoKhaki over the snakebite leather (11) warpaint on skin & weapons Scab Red

(12) inked the weapons, teeth, and sections of the clothing with 6 part water, 3 part Future Floor Finish, 2 part Flesh Wash, & 1 part Black Ink. The detail brush was used to paint in lines between the belts and shirt.

(13) Lightened up the red paint with some Red Gore, then a 50/50 Red Gore & Blood Red mix. (14) Added some yellow mainly to the guns. First it was a coat of Bubonic Brown then I lighted it with a coat of Golden Yellow. I made sure to let the edges of the Bubonic Brown show through (basically a very simple blend).

(14) I used future floor finish, water, a little green ink, & even less purple. I used it to help define the muscles. You'll see a close up in the upper left corner. I was pleasantly surprised.

And here they are...
